The place to stay in Athens, whether you need veterinary care or just a cosy, gentle base to explore the city.

We live on Sifnos and had to rush our dog Ronnie to the mainland for emergency veterinary care, arriving with nothing but the clothes on our backs. We booked one night, kept extending, and ended up staying nine days. In one of the worst weeks of my life, this little garden house became our safe haven.

Although we never met the host in person, her care came through in every message. A dog lover herself, she welcomed Ronnie without a second thought and talked us through where to find blankets and extras to make him comfortable while he recovered. She kept in touch daily, and every message started with how Ronnie was doing, never business. Her kindness meant more than I can say.

The location couldn't be better. It's a 5-minute walk to Plakentia Vet, a 24-hour veterinary clinic; 4 minutes to several convenience stores; and 10 minutes to Doukissis Plakentias metro station, which takes you straight into the heart of Athens or out to the airport.

The studio itself has a compact but functional kitchen and all the basics you need, and it was easy to turn into a cosy nest. It would be perfect for a student on a longer stay, a nervous or first-time solo traveller, or a couple wanting a quiet, peaceful place to themselves. The neighbourhood feels real and lived-in, and much calmer and gentler than central Athens.

A small bonus: the host, in her own words, "lives for coffee," and her fantastic illy machine has my father now seriously considering buying one 😂

I can't thank you enough for all your kindness and support. I'm already looking forward to coming back and staying again in happier times. 💛
